In the early morning hours of Monday, April 15, 1912, the brand-new, supposedly unsinkable Titanic sank on her maiden voyage after ramming an iceberg. Of the 2,208 people on board, only 712 were saved. The remaining 1,496 either drowned or froze to death in the icy-cold waters of the North Atlantic. The disaster became the most infamous tragedy in maritime history. Yet a century after the liner's sinking, the history of the Titanic is still shrouded in misinformation and mystery.
The authors bring the tragedy to life through a thrilling narrative. They follow the ship's life from design and construction through to the maiden voyage, using rarely-seen accounts of the sinking from passengers of all classes and crew alike. They tell the dramatic stories of lives lost and people saved, of the rescue ship Carpathia and of the aftermath of the sinking. The narrative is supported through scholarly research, and hundreds of end notes cite original source material. Numerous appendices focus on some of the most controversial aspects of the disaster and presents rarely-considered evidence on the subjects. The book also features an introduction by George Behe, a former Vice-President of the Titanic Historical Society.
Profusely illustrated with over 300 images (50 in colour), including many rare and unique views of the ship, this is as accurate and gripping a telling of the story of the White Star Line's Titanic and her sinking as you will read anywhere.

Details: Full title: Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography ISBN-10: 1848688342 ISBN-13: 978-1848688346 Format: Hardcover with dust jacket Size: A4(8.27"x11.69", or 210x297 mm), 424 pages, 479 photographs andillustrations, all-new g/a plans of the ship, + a 16-page color sectioncontaining 27 additional photos and illustrations. Availability: In stock. True First Edition Collectible. Description: Over a century after her maiden voyage across the North Atlantic, and ninety-five years after her loss to a German torpedo, prepare to relive her life story through words and pictures as you have never, ever, seen her before. The Lusitania was one of the grandest Atlantic liners of the Edwardian era. For a time she was both the largest and fastest ship in the world. For seven-and-a-half years, she crisscrossed the harsh North Atlantic between England and the United States. During this period, she came to be both beloved and world-famous; at the time, her name was synonymous with power, progress, and luxury. When the world was engulfed by conflict in August of 1914, the future of the mighty Lusitania seemed uncertain. However it was thought unlikely that any sub commander would have the stomach to attack her, as she was still in merchant service carrying non-combatant men, women and children. Even if she was attacked, it would have seemed quite impossible that she would be sunk. When the path of the Lusitania crossed with the path of the German submarine U-20 on May 7, 1915, however, she was attacked without warning. A single torpedo was sent into her side, and she sank a mere eighteen minutes later. Of the 1959 who were aboard her, 1198 were killed. Since the sinking, the Lusitania's technological greatness and her incredible career have faded into obscurity, to be replaced with lengthy commentaries on the political ramifications of her sinking, as well as on numerous conspiracy theories. This new volume - not a revised edition of the author's previous work, but a true first-edition collectible - attempts to show the entire career of the Lusitania, from conception, to a lengthy and magnificent career, to an untimely premature demise... all in context. Through words, pictures and illustrations, many of them never before published, the Lusitania can finally be revealed in a way that celebrates her life as well as commemorates her death, and the deaths of so many innocent men, women and children. Through the pages of Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography, readers will be transported through time, back to the decks of the legendary Cunarder as she cut her way through the waters of the North Atlantic. Included in these 424 pages are some 479 photographs and illustrationsof the ship and the people who sailed aboard her; many of these are rareor previously unpublished. There will also be a 16-page color sectioncontaining 27 additional photos and illustrations. Additionally, an all new and highly detailed set of general arrangement plans of the liner, drawn by the author, will be included. Also included are the special introductory note from Lusitania survivor Barbara McDermott (now deceased), and the unforgettable Introduction to the 2007 volume by Mike Poirier and Jim Kalafus (co-authors of the groundbreaking Lest We Forget articles on the Lusitania). There are six informational appendices, including: A complete sailing schedule for the Lusitania, 1907-1915 -- all 202 Crossings from beginning to end. A list of the ship's Captains from the start of her career to its end, including the length and inclusive dates of their tenures. A First Class passenger list for the maiden west-bound crossing. A passenger and crew list for the final crossing. A study of the ship's years in service, including busiest years and lightest years. An entire chapter is devoted to a study of the liner's specific design and technical features. Another chapter is devoted to her whole career (September 1907-August, 1914) and its highlights -- from stormy crossings to famous passengers and notable events. Yet another chapter is devoted to her wartime service and final crossing; included herein are many fresh, previously unpublished accounts of those who were aboard the liner, all woven into the running narrative. Contained within the 150000+ words of this volume's primary text is information that has never been published before. This lays to rest many of the half-truths, rumors, misinformation and conspiracy theories that have surrounded the ship, her design, and her sinking in a logical and factual manner. Available in both standard and Signed & Numbered (limited to 500 in number) versions. Please make your selection below. Please note that this is the first of a three-volume set of companion volumes. All in the same format and size, the following two - On A Sea of Glass: The Life & Loss of the RMS Titanic and The Edwardian Superliners: A Trio of Trios - are also now available for order.
